What a wonderful concept–wounded warriors helping to train service dogs for other wounded warriors and healing themselves in the process. An alarmingly large number of our troops are coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq with traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder. Both conditions manifest in depression and hopelessness. But the Warrior Canine Connection is reaching out to those veterans and connecting them with puppies who will become service dogs for wounded veterans so they can be involved in the training of the pups. Just as constant depression results in chemical reactions in the brain that sustain the depression research has found that petting an animal such as a dog also releases endorphins which counteracts the depression. Involvement with the dogs provides these warriors with an elevating experience, love of an animal and the unconditional acceptance animals provide humans.
