The Federal Mental Health Action Agenda Fundamentally Altering the Mental Health System

On that fateful December 2012 day when a deranged shooter entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut with several assault weapons he took the lives of twenty innocent children and six adults.  It wasn’t that this was the only time a crazed shooter suffering from mental illness in this country entered a school and took the lives of unsuspecting students and teachers.  Rather it brought a nation to its knees because the kids in the Sandy Hook school were just babies only 5 and 6 years old.  Somehow we as a nation had started to become desensitized to this kind of violence because of its frequency and that included our government.  But not this time.  This time our outrage has been translated into action and today we have The Federal Mental Health Action Agenda.  This government initiated and supported initiative resulted in the President’s Executive Order 13263.  It outlines five principles around which the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health has based its work.  One of the outcomes of this commission will be the wholesale transformation of mental health services to adults and children. It is about time!
